John
John was written by the apostle John, one of the original twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. John focuses his gospel on the deity of Jesus as the Son of God, his role in the creation of the universe, and his union with God the Father. John’s gospel includes eight miracles to demonstrate Jesus Christ was the Son of God. His accounts are some of the most beloved in scripture; “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word was God”, “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”, the seven I AM statements of Christ, and the lesson of abiding in Christ as the fruitful branch of the vine. John provides unique insights into Jesus’ ministry in Jerusalem and in his final hours before the crucifixion.
The figure is a mosaic of the Apostle John from the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, Patmos, Greece. Patmos is a Greek island where John lived as a prisoner in exile. Revelation 1:3 mentions Patmos as the place he received his vision of Christ at the end times.
The monastery was built on Patmos in 1088-1091 and is a UNESCO heritage site protecting the site of John’s vision and the extensive library of ancient New Testament texts, Minuscules, and lectionaries housed in the monastery.
